So it is a good idea to have it running beforehand if I want to use the scanner. If the virtual machine is not already running minimized, you have to wait for it booting and loading Windows XP before running the scanning application. I even created a desktop shortcut to automatically run the scanning application without having to manually start the virtual machine and then the application. This is analogous to the "XP Mode" in Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate. I could then switch the virtual machine in "Unity Mode" so I can run only the scanning application in a Window within the host (Windows 10).

My workaround was to install VMWare Player, install Windows XP in a virtual machine, connect the scanner to the virtual machine, install the XP drivers and use it from there. But it did not include this model and trying to force similar models did not work. So I thought of third party solutions such as Vuescan which (I thought, I hoped) supports all old scanners and MFPs.

This officially has drivers only for Windows XP and earlier! I managed to cheat and use it in Windows 7 32-bit using the XP drivers but now I had Windows 10 64-bit and there was no 64-bit driver available, not even for Windows XP 64-bit (I could use that). This was going good until I connected his old HP Scanjet 5470C scanner.

It was running Windows 7 32-bit and I could try booting to the new PC and then upgrade to 10, but the generation gap is too large to work, so I decided to do a clean installation of Windows 10 64-bit. I recently upgraded my dad's computer from Pentium 4 "Prescott" (yes, that old) to a new s1151 Pentium CPU. Pretty succinct and thorough and direct instructions from Rollinjukebox there!!! Anyway, I can initiate a scan from Faststone. Hope the scanner front buttons work, I haven't tried any of them yet. As suggested down in the thread I uninstalled all that stuff (except the Photostudio 5.5, don't know if I'll use that, probably stick with Faststone). The first thing I'd done was to install the software from the supplied CD, which failed, of course.
Not sure what all was necessary, but am good now. I also had done the installation in compatibility mode for Windows 7, and run as administrator for all users as suggested down in the thread. I'd installed the EXE's a bunch of times, different ways. The big hint I needed was in the OP which was to search the computer for scanner drivers and pick Canon, Inc. I also installed the Faststone Image Viewer 6.9 free software and just used it to make my first scan! Yowza! It did take me close to 2 hours to get this done, lots of detours, failures. The info there was pretty much all I needed to get up and running. Yes!!! I just successfully set up my Canon Lide 35 scanner with my Windows 10 64bit mini-tower system! Thanks so much to the OP.
